IELTS Reading
Matching Headings Questions

On this page, we're going to look at 'matching headings' questions. They can exist some of the most challenging of the IELTS Reading test.

The aim of this blazon of question is,

to test if yous are able to understand the principal thought of each paragraph .

In that location are two possible strategies for answering matching heading questions:

1) Read text get-go, and then headings.

2) Read headings first, then text.

Some teachers will tell you to always read the text before yous await at the headings while others say yous should definitely read the headings commencement.

Personally, I retrieve the first strategy is the easiest. Withal, my communication is to try both when you're practicing to see which 1 works best for yous. Different people process information in different ways so one method may conform you ameliorate than the other.

Either way, if a matching headings question does come up upward for one of the texts in your test, do information technology first. Past doing so, you'll already sympathize the main ideas of the text past the fourth dimension you lot get to the other questions. This will save you a lot of time.

Earlier we look at the two strategies in item, I desire to quickly highlight the primary problems students run across with these types of questions and also give you some key tips.

Key problems:

  • There are more than headings than paragraphs – this makes it harder to narrow downwardly the correct ones.
  • Some headings will be very like in pregnant.
  • It'due south easy to confuse specific details in a paragraph with the main idea – they may be unlike.
  • Synonyms and paraphrasing will often be used.
  • It'southward like shooting fish in a barrel to spend also much time on this blazon of question.

Cardinal tips:

  • Cross out each heading in the test booklet as you match it to a paragraph. This will eliminate information technology from further consideration as you move onto other paragraphs.
  • Work through the paragraphs in society but move on if you're struggling to detect the heading match. Come back to information technology once you've eliminated more headings and have fewer to choose between.

So, let's look at the two strategies in detail.

Strategy 1 – Read Text Commencement, Then Headings

Follow these steps.

1) Read the instructions

Information technology's vital that you lot understand what you have to do. Here'southward an example of how the instructions will be set out. It'south taken from a existent IELTS Reading paper.

In the middle of the instructions are the headings only remember, for this commencement strategy don't read them yet.

There will sometimes exist a sample respond for analogy. In this case, it'southward the reply to Department E. Knowing this answer ways that you tin can immediately cross out 'heading 6' in the list of headings and eliminate it from further consideration.

two) Read the first paragraph

Your aim is to identify the main idea. Focus on the beginning 1 or two sentences and the concluding judgement as these volition ordinarily innovate and summarise this chief thought. Skim read the rest of the text. You do not need to know the detail for this blazon of question.

Notation that occasionally a department will contain more than one paragraph. In this case, yous'll demand to observe the main idea in each paragraph.

3) Summarise the main idea

Briefly sum up the primary idea of the paragraph in your ain words as if you were writing your ain heading. Practice information technology in but a few words or a brusk phrase at the most. Write this beside it.

4) Read the headings

At present information technology's time to read the list of headings. As yous do so, try to match your summary of the beginning paragraph to i of the headings. Make certain that yous read them all advisedly and don't just select the first one that seems to lucifer every bit there may be 2 that are very similar in meaning.

Expect out for key words as clues just too synonyms as these are very likely to exist used.

Allow'southward practice the steps and then far.

Here's the beginning Section (paragraph) of our sample text. If yous haven't already read the instructions, curl dorsum upwardly and exercise so, just don't read the headings yet.

Then work through steps 2-4 and see if you can identify the correct heading. I've underlined the first and last sentences to highlight them for you.

This heading is quite easy to match as the main idea is made clear in the very beginning sentence, often chosen the topic judgement.

The answer is:

v. Governments and management of the environs

Did yous become it right?

If you didn't, become back and study the paragraph over again and see if you lot can work out why it is the correct match.

v) Repeat for all sections

Repeat these steps for each section of the text.

If you lot get stuck on a particular paragraph, move on and come up back to it when you've matched more heading and crossed them off the list. It will be easier to find the one y'all're struggling with when there are fewer headings to choose from

6) Similar headings

Where you have 2 very similar headings and tin't make up one's mind which is the right 1, write them out one under the other to help you focus in on the difference between them.

vii) Eliminate used headings

Once you lot accept matched a heading, cross through it in pencil to eliminate it from further consideration.

Strategy 2 – Read Headings First, So Text

Follow these steps.

i) Read the headings

First, read the full instructions, including the headings, and then focus in on the headings.

Read each advisedly and effort to sympathise what it means. Call up, each will summarise the chief idea of the paragraph it matches.

Also remember that there will be more headings than paragraphs so yous won't need them all.

two) Underline key words

If a heading contains names, numbers, dates or place names, underline these to identify them as key words that should be easy to spot in the text. Or in that location may exist a primal substantive that stands out. Information technology could be ane that occurs in more than than one heading.

Doing this will help y'all to match data in the text and headings as you read each paragraph.

Here'southward are the instructions of our sample text for Strategy 2. Once again, information technology's taken from a existent IELTS Reading paper.

Take a go at these commencement ii steps.

3) Identify similar titles

There will often be two headings with a like meaning which can make it difficult to make up one's mind which ane is the correct match.

If yous practice spot ii similar headings, make a annotation of this. It volition remind you to look at them both closely when you think one of them is the lucifer.

four) Read the first paragraph

Your aim is to place the main idea. Focus on the showtime one or ii sentences and the terminal sentence as these will probably introduce and summarise this main idea. Skim read the rest of the text. You exercise not demand to know the detail for this type of question.

Expect out for any keywords you underlined in the heading. Exist enlightened that synonyms could be used instead.

Note that occasionally a section will contain more than i paragraph. In this case, you'll need to detect the main thought in each paragraph.

v) Choose the matching heading

Now that you empathize the primary thought of the kickoff paragraph, get dorsum to the headings and select the all-time friction match. Where y'all have two possible headings, write them out one under the other to help you focus in on the divergence between them.

Once you have made your determination and filled in your respond, cross through the heading in pencil to eliminate it from further consideration.

6) Move on

As I mentioned in the tips in a higher place, if you're struggling to find the correct heading, move on and come back to it once you've eliminated more than headings and have fewer to choose between.

7) Repeat for all sections

Repeat these steps for each section of the text.

At present have a practise with 1 of the paragraphs (Section B) from the sample test paper. I've added the headings over again beneath to get in easier.

I suggest that you focus on the get-go ii sentences and the last i (I've underlined them), so skim read the rest of the paragraph.

The correct respond is,

8  The possibility of attracting the wrong kind of educatee

If y'all didn't become this, go back and report the paragraph again and see if y'all can piece of work out why information technology is the right match.

The more than you lot practise matching headings questions, the easier they volition get. Cull the strategy that yous find works all-time for you and stick to it.
